The expensive edible-oil mistakes are rarely adulteration — they are fraction mistakes. A buyer fixes "RBD palm oil" because it quotes cheaper than olein, and in a Karachi or Lagos winter the cargo clouds solid in tanks the plant expected to pump from, because palm oil's melting point runs 33–39°C against olein's 24°C maximum. What is the specification for RBD palm olein?

Per the PORAM Standard Specifications for Processed Palm Oil, RBD palm olein is: FFA (as palmitic) 0.1% max, moisture and impurities 0.1% max, iodine value 56 minimum (Wijs), melting point 24°C maximum (AOCS Cc 3-25), and colour 3 Red maximum in a 5¼" Lovibond cell. The IV and melting point are what separate olein — the liquid fraction — from RBD palm oil itself.

FFA measures refining quality and remaining shelf life — palm results are expressed "as palmitic" with a molecular weight of 256, soft oils usually as acid value in mg KOH/g, so the two scales are not directly comparable. IV is the identity test: it counts unsaturation and cannot be faked by deodorising. Melting point (the slip point, AOCS Cc 3-25) confirms which palm fraction is in the tank. M&I flags water that accelerates FFA rise in transit. Colour is only meaningful with the cell stated — 3 Red in a 5¼" Lovibond cell is the palm convention, measured on a Tintometer. A peroxide value against the Codex refined-oil ceiling of 10 meq O₂/kg is the freshness tell worth adding for long voyages.

Why does the iodine value catch blends the price can't?

Because fractionation arithmetic works in both directions. Stearin — the solid fraction, IV 48 max, melting 44°C min per PORAM — is the cheap stream, and an olein-stearin blend can be tuned to land in palm oil's 50–55 IV window on paper. The blend betrays itself in melting behaviour: it will not hold the 33–39°C slip-point range that genuine RBD palm oil shows. That is why IV and melting point must be specified together on every palm confirmation — either number alone is gameable, the pair is not. On soft oils the IV works as a species check: a "sunflower" cargo assaying at IV 100 is not sunflower (118–145), whatever the paperwork says.

Match the Fraction to the Duty

Olein is the frying and household cooking grade — the standard import into Pakistan and South Asia, where it stays pourable at kitchen temperatures. RBD palm oil proper goes to vanaspati, shortening, bakery fats, and food manufacturing where solidity is wanted; stearin feeds soap and oleochemicals. Refined soybean and sunflower serve the premium retail and salad-oil segments, priced off CBOT soybean oil and FOB Black Sea/Rotterdam sunflower rather than Bursa Malaysia's FCPO — the hedging map is in the sourcing guide's benchmark section. Where Edible-Oil Specs Go Wrong

  • Fixing "palm oil" when the duty needs olein. The 33–39°C versus ≤24°C melting gap decides whether the cargo pumps or clouds — the single most common fraction mistake we see in enquiries.
  • Treating the load-port COA as the whole story. PORAM specifications are shipped-quality final, and FFA rises in transit with heat and moisture — specify a discharge re-test and confirm the flexitank or tank's previous-cargo and tank-hygiene documentation against the FOSFA lists before loading.
  • Accepting IV without a melting point. Blend arithmetic hits IV targets; the slip point exposes them.
  • Reading colour without the cell size. 3 Red in a 5¼" cell is not 3 Red in a 1" cell — a COA that omits the cell is quoting nothing.
  • Applying palm FFA limits to soft oils. Palm quotes FFA as palmitic; Codex soft-oil quality runs on acid value (≤ 0.6 mg KOH/g refined). Comparing the raw numbers across the two scales rejects good cargoes and passes bad ones.
  • Leaving Halal and phytosanitary certificates until after fixture. Both are named documents in the standard edible-oil pack; late paperwork strands compliant oil at customs.
